How to Land a Job in Investment Banking at the Best Investment Banking Schools

A degree from an elite university can be a huge advantage in the field of investment banking. This is especially applicable to banks with bulge brackets based in the US and London. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t land an investment banking job even if you’re a non-target school, or even a semi target school. It just takes more work and a bigger network to locate a job.

The most important factor is whether your school is considered to be a «target.» These are schools that regularly send a lot of investment bankers to the largest firms. These schools are chosen by banks due to the fact that they know their students have the right skills and fit into their culture.

Harvard, MIT Wharton, Columbia Chicago Booth, Kellogg Northwestern Darden UVA and Fuqua Duke are all on the list. Other prestigious schools such as Imperial College London and New York City’s Baruch College also make the list. In terms of the curriculum the finance programs at these schools are known for their analytical rigor and practical applications that help prepare students for careers in investment banking. These schools provide a variety of events for networking and education for students who are interested in the field.

Apart from attending a specific school, you can increase your chances by participating in extracurricular activities related to investment banking. You can participate in this through attending seminars on investment banking and joining finance-related clubs or coops, or an internship in finance your sophomore year. It is recommended to include at least two leadership experiences on your resume prior to when the recruitment season begins in your junior year.
